Few things worry a parent more than hearing, “Your child’s tooth needs to be taken out.” We understand. Baby teeth are meant to fall out on their own, so when a dentist recommends removing one, you naturally want to know why, whether it will hurt, and what happens next.
At Child Dentist Indirapuram, Dr. Anamika Jain, a post-graduate pediatric dentist (KGMC Lucknow, gold medalist, formerly at RML Hospital, New Delhi), performs baby tooth extraction for children from Indirapuram, Vaishali, Vasundhara and across Ghaziabad. We always try to save a baby tooth first. When removal is genuinely the safest option, we make it quick, calm and comfortable for your child.
What Is Baby Tooth Extraction?
Baby tooth extraction (also called milk tooth extraction or primary tooth removal) is the gentle removal of a primary tooth that cannot be saved or that is blocking the healthy growth of a permanent tooth. It is done in the clinic under local anaesthesia, with the area numbed first so your child feels pressure, not pain.
Why does a tooth that will fall out anyway matter so much? Baby teeth help your child chew, speak clearly and hold space for the permanent teeth coming in. That is why the decision to remove one is always made carefully, after a proper examination and, where needed, an X-ray.
When Does a Child Need a Baby Tooth Extracted?
We recommend extraction only when it is in your child’s best interest. Common reasons include:
- Severe decay that has destroyed too much of the tooth to restore with a filling or crown
- Infection or abscess (swelling, pus, a pimple-like bump on the gum, fever or constant pain) that cannot be controlled with a root canal treatment
- Injury or trauma from a fall that has cracked or loosened a tooth beyond repair (see our dental emergency care)
- Over-retained baby teeth, when a baby tooth refuses to loosen and the permanent tooth is coming in behind or beside it (often called “double teeth” or “shark teeth”)
- Crowding, where removing a tooth creates room as part of a plan for braces or alignment
- Teeth that are in the way of eruption, or extra teeth present from birth or very early in life
If your child has a toothache, swelling or difficulty eating, please do not wait. Early assessment often means a simpler treatment.
Can the Baby Tooth Be Saved Instead?
Often, yes. Before recommending removal, Dr. Anamika Jain considers every option:
- A filling for small to moderate cavities
- A pulp therapy (children’s root canal) to clean an infected nerve and keep the tooth
- A stainless steel or tooth-coloured crown to protect a weak tooth
We explain each option clearly, including what happens if the tooth is left untreated, so you can decide with confidence. Extraction is chosen only when saving the tooth would not be safe or successful.
Is Baby Tooth Extraction Painful? How We Keep Children Comfortable
Your child’s comfort comes first. At our clinic we use:
- Topical numbing gel before any injection, so the anaesthetic is barely felt
- Local anaesthesia so the tooth and gum are completely numb
- Tell-Show-Do and positive communication to explain each step in child-friendly words
- Distraction and gentle handling to keep the visit relaxed
- Sedation options such as nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), where clinically appropriate for very anxious children or longer procedures
For most children the extraction itself takes only a few minutes.
What to Expect: The Baby Tooth Extraction Procedure
- Examination and X-ray (if needed). We check the tooth, the roots and the developing permanent tooth underneath.
- Explanation. We explain the plan to you and your child.
- Numbing. Gel first, then local anaesthesia.
- Gentle removal. The tooth is loosened and removed with care for the surrounding gum and the permanent tooth below.
- Pressure and clean-up. A small gauze pad is placed on the area to control bleeding.
- Aftercare instructions. You leave with clear written or spoken guidance.
We suggest a light meal beforehand unless we advise otherwise (for example, for sedation), and that you tell us about any medicines your child takes or any bleeding problems.
Aftercare: What to Do After Your Child’s Tooth Is Removed
Proper aftercare helps the area heal quickly and comfortably:
- Keep the gauze in place with gentle biting pressure for the time we advise
- Wait until the numbness wears off before eating, so your child doesn’t bite the cheek or lip
- Offer soft, cool foods such as curd, ice cream, mashed banana or khichdi for the rest of the day
- Avoid hot drinks, spicy food, crunchy snacks and drinking through a straw for the first 24 hours
- Do not let your child poke the area with fingers or the tongue, or rinse and spit forcefully on the first day
- Brush the other teeth as usual and keep the area clean after the first day, as we show you
- Use pain relief only as advised by the dentist, and always at the dose suited to your child’s age and weight
Some light oozing of blood on the first day is normal. Call us promptly if bleeding does not stop with pressure, swelling increases, fever develops, or pain gets worse after two to three days.
Will Losing a Baby Tooth Early Affect the Permanent Teeth?
It can. When a baby tooth is lost much earlier than it should be, neighbouring teeth may drift into the gap and leave too little room for the permanent tooth. This can lead to crowding or crooked teeth.
To prevent this, Dr. Anamika Jain may recommend a space maintainer, a small, comfortable appliance that holds the gap open until the permanent tooth is ready to come in. It is especially useful after early loss of baby molars.
Baby Teeth Falling Out: A Normal Timeline
Most children lose their first baby teeth around age 6 or 7 (usually the lower front teeth), and the last baby teeth, typically the back molars and canines, come out around age 10 to 12. A tooth that is loose because it is ready to fall will usually fall on its own and does not need to be pulled. If a baby tooth is still firm well after its permanent replacement has started to show, or if a tooth is lost far too early, a consultation will tell you whether anything needs to be done.

Frequently Asked Questions About Baby Tooth Extraction
When should a baby tooth be pulled? A baby tooth should be removed when it is too decayed or infected to save, when it is badly damaged by injury, or when it is blocking the eruption of a permanent tooth. A pediatric dentist should always make this decision after an examination.
Does baby tooth extraction hurt? The tooth is numbed first, so your child should feel pressure rather than pain. Topical gel is used before the injection. Some mild soreness afterwards is normal and settles in a day or two.
How long does a baby tooth extraction take? The procedure itself usually takes only a few minutes. The whole appointment is a little longer to allow for examination, numbing and instructions.
What if my child is very scared of the dentist? Dental fear is common. We use gentle communication, distraction and, where suitable, sedation options such as laughing gas. Tell us about your child’s worries before the visit so we can plan.
Can I pull my child’s loose baby tooth at home? A tooth that is only slightly loose is usually best left to fall naturally. If it is very loose, a little wiggling is usually fine, but do not force it. If there is pain, swelling or a permanent tooth already showing behind it, please visit us.
What can my child eat after the extraction? Soft, cool foods such as curd, ice cream, mashed fruit and khichdi. Avoid hot, spicy and crunchy foods and straws for the first day.
Will the permanent tooth grow back properly after an early extraction? Usually yes, but early loss can cause neighbouring teeth to move. A space maintainer may be recommended to keep the right amount of room.
How much does baby tooth extraction cost in Indirapuram? The cost depends on the tooth, its condition and whether sedation or X-rays are needed. Please call 0120-4225557 or book a consultation and we will explain the estimate before treatment.
